Backyard Blunders: The Perils of DIY Koi Ponds

Backyard Blunders: The Perils of DIY Koi Ponds

mobile-image

In your mind's eye, you picture a seamless backyard project that transforms your once patchy lawn into an Instagrammable oasis. Shimmering water, elegant koi gracefully gliding, and the soothing sound of a waterfall—what could possibly go wrong?

A whole lot.

Building a koi pond can quickly turn into a comedy of errors, leaving you knee-deep in the muck. Before you dive headfirst into this project, let’s explore the potential pitfalls of building your aquatic landscape.

Building too Shallow

While easier to dig, shallow pools can harm your backyard ecosystem in a couple of ways:

  • Temperature regulation: Shallow water heats up quickly. This rapid temperature fluctuation stresses koi, who cannot retreat to cool down in deeper water.
  • Algae control: Shallow water allows more water to reach the bottom of the pond, which promotes algae growth. Algae is not only unsightly but also steals oxygen from koi.

For these reasons, we recommend your koi pond be no less than 36” deep. This depth ensures that you maintain a more stable environment for your fish while maintaining the health of your pond.

Not Neutralizing Chlorinated Water

Most tap water contains chlorine or chloramine (a combination of chlorine and ammonia).

While this water is safe for human consumption, it can damage the delicate gill tissue of koi, cause skin irritation, and also kill healthy bacteria in your koi pond. Always add chlorine/chloramine neutralizer when filling your koi pond.

Not Changing Pond Water

It is also essential to regularly change out a portion of your pond water. How often you do this depends on a few factors, including:

  • Pond size
  • Number of fish
  • Filter efficiency
  • Water quality

Generally, we recommend changing 10-20% of the water every week or two using a pump. It is essential to replace water gradually—otherwise, you risk shocking your koi and disrupting your pond’s health.

Inadequate Filters

Filtration systems play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced pond ecosystem. And without an adequately sized system, you cannot remove excess food, debris, and bacteria from the pond. Over time, this will begin to see algae growth, rising ammonia levels, and reduced oxygen levels—all of which harm your koi fish.

When selecting a filter, choose a system rated for a pond larger than yours!

Underestimating the Labor

There's a reason homeowners turn to koi pond pros to bring their visions to life—it’s hard work! It also requires experience and expertise.

In addition to grading and leveling the site, digging the pool, and installing plumbing, you must select and carefully place natural rocks. Then, you must balance the ecosystem to ensure koi can flourish. This labor-intensive work takes careful planning.

It’s easy to see why DIY enthusiasts might quickly lose their enthusiasm for this project!
